★ Malibu was originally settled by the Chumash, Native Americans whose territory extended loosely from the San Joaquin Valley to San Louis Obispo to Malibu, along with several islands off the southern coast of California.
★ The name “Malibu” was derived from the Native American word “Humaliwo” which means “the surf sounds loudly.”
★ In 1976, Cat Stevens had his famous near-death experience in Malibu, when he nearly drowned while he was swimming.
★ In 1989, Actor Martin Sheen was named honorary mayor of Malibu.
★ Hollywood was originally the site of a fig orchard.
★ The majority of Malibu was privately owned until 1929 when a court ruling allowed construction to begin on what is now known as the Pacific Coast Highway.
